2017: America’s Worst Year Ever?

Member Group : Jerry Shenk

According to progressives, a pestilence has descended upon America.

The anguished, apocalyptic keening of Democratic operatives inside the party, in liberal media, Hollywood and academia, plus certain establishment Republicans, is easily understood: Following a rigged Democratic primary and one-sided campaign coverage, despite assurances of Hillary Clinton’s inevitability, Donald Trump, a man political insiders despise, was elected president of the United States — without the left’s consent, mind you — in an open, democratic election. Horrors!

The self-superior left’s undisguised contempt for the president is a tacit admission of their contempt for the millions of regular American voters who gave Donald Trump his solid Electoral College majority. One might logically assume that the biased media’s constant venom is designed to punish, distract and/or mislead rather than inform Americans.
.
But, let’s indulge progressives’ cataclysmic anxieties by reviewing some of the awful things President Trump has done during his freshman year in office.

In 2017, President Trump nominated seventy-three federal judges, including Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. He issued executive orders for a comprehensive plan to reorganize the executive branch, for government digital modernization, for ethical standards, including a lobbying ban, and a full audit of Pentagon spending. He ordered reviews of America’s military readiness and nuclear posture.

The president promoted America’s energy independence and dominance in world energy markets.

President Trump declared a Nationwide Public Health Emergency on opioids and committed $500 million to fight the crisis. He signed a Veterans Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act that allows Department of Veterans Affairs officials to dismiss incompetent employees and safeguard whistleblowers.

President Trump signed a tax reform bill which provides $billions in real, in-your-pocket cuts for middle class taxpayers, improves American employers’ competitiveness, attracts and repatriates capital, and virtually repeals the unpopular Obamacare mandate. He prioritized $500 million in SBA loans for female-owned businesses. After President Trump issued an executive order mandating that two regulations be repealed for every new one, federal agencies cut sixteen outmoded or frivolous rules for each new one, effectively reducing the regulatory burden on employers, especially small businesses.

During President Trump’s first year, America’s GDP surged; 1.7 million new jobs were created; unemployment dropped to 4.1 percent; the Dow Jones Average set records; and Americans’ economic confidence rebounded to a 17-year high. Illegal immigration declined by roughly fifty percent.

President Trump delivered on campaign promises to enact significant tax cuts, to boost American energy production, and, after years of apologetic globalism, he is reaffirming the United States’ traditional role as a world power.

Pretty ugly stuff, huh?

Actually, progressives are threatened by success. They’re angry because the president disrupted two terms of executive incompetence and extra-legal overreach and is restoring constitutional norms. Government has begun to work as originally designed, rather than as entertainment industry and academic dilettantes, liberal newsrooms, militant feminists and socialists desire.

There’s little mystery about the left’s misery over President Trump’s first twelve months: They’re terrified that, progressive political peevishness notwithstanding, Americans might notice that 2017 was a very good year.
