Debate Begins Over Marriage

Senator wants constitutional amendment to define marriage

Sen. John Eichelberger (R-Blair) has introduced Senate Bill 707, which has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee for debate. The bill would amend Article I of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, adding a section to read: "Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid and recognized as a marriage in this Commonwealth." Twelve of Pennsylvania’s 19-member congressional delegation voted for a bill which would create a national historic site in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and, among other uses, would allow the Department of the Interior to lease land to the University of the Virgin Islands for breeding cattle.
