Township Supervisors’ Executive Director
Elected President of National Township Association

David M. Sanko, executive director of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS), was recently elected president of the National Association of Towns and Townships (NATaT). Sanko will serve in the position through 2018.

"These are exciting times with a new congress and a new president to make sure local governments’ voices are heard as partners, and not special interests, in serving mutual constituents," Sanko said.

NATaT was founded in 1976 by local government associations in several states to give smaller communities — towns, townships, and other suburban and rural municipalities — a strong voice in Washington, D.C. The association champions fair-share federal funding decisions and promotes legislative and regulatory policies that will strengthen grassroots local government.

NATaT staff members, in partnership with members of other local government associations, work to educate lawmakers and other federal officials about the unique nature of small-community government operations and the need for policies and funding that meet the special needs of those communities as well as the reduction of unnecessary and unfunded mandates that add to the cost of government without improving the quality.

PSATS represents Pennsylvania’s 1,453 townships of the second class and is committed to preserving and strengthening township government and securing greater visibility and involvement for townships in the state and federal political arenas. Townships of the second class represent more residents — 5.5 million Pennsylvanians — than any other type of political subdivision in the commonwealth.
