Know the Drill: The Truth About Natural Gas Severance Tax

Last week, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed the highest natural gas tax in the nation. The Senate is expected to consider the bill this week. The Commonwealth Foundation’s latest video in our series, Know the Drill: The Truth About Natural Gas, looks at this much-debated tax.

Proponents say the tax it is needed for the environmental costs associated with drilling, but these measures are already funded through fees and fines. We asked local residents in drilling communities what they thought about a severance tax. And we found that drilling companies are already addressing many of the community needs associated with drilling, such as repairing roads and bridges.
