March 08, 2010:

A couple of "thumbs up" to hand out this Monday morning:

First, Auditor General Jack Wagner - now a candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor - endorsed the idea of holding a state constitutional convention. To my knowledge, he is the only Democratic candidate to sign onto a process that would restore the right of we the people of Penn's Woods to govern ourselves.

Wagner has been campaigning as a reformer. Backing a constitutional convention, especially should he be nominated and elected, would be a huge step in that direction.

And, in a break from tradition, the Bucks County Republican Committee decided not to endorse in the contested primary for the GOP Congressional nomination in the 8th Congressional District.

Former Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick appears to be leading in the quest to recapture the seat he lost to Congressman Patrick Murphy two years ago. But the Republican primary is hotly contested, and Fitzpatrick wisely chose to urge the route that would let the voters decide.

A spirited primary campaign is likely to ensue, which means voters will be well acquainted with the eventual nominee who will emerge to take on Murphy in November.

In the end, that improves Republican chances of winning in a seat that is likely to return to the GOP fold.
