The Main Thing in 2012

As the Republican Presidential nomination and delegate selection process stretches out longer than most thought likely, conservatives risk being distracted. We should remember the wise and simple words of Haley Barbour: the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. So what’s the main thing in 2012? It’s to insure the defeat of Barack Obama’s bid for a second term.

While Republicans are jockeying to see who will win the right to challenge the President in November, conservatives need to keep reminding middle America that this has not only been a disastrous first term, a second Obama term would almost certainly be worse. The principal reason it would be worse is because there would no longer be any restraining influence on radical policies forced the need to win another election. Unrestrained economic radicalism is dangerous. The assault on our free enterprise system that we might see from a second Obama term could cripple our economy for years to come, and place us on a trajectory to permanent economic inferiority to China.

This President has already been established as the one who has done the most in our history to increase the cost of governmental regulation on business. Just this week, the Heritage Foundation released the latest in a series of studies on increasing regulation that carries the ominous title Red Tape Rising.

Here’s what it said:

During the first three years of the Obama Administration, 106 new major federal regulations added more than $46 billion per year in new costs for Americans. This is almost four times the number—and more than five times the cost—of the major regulations issued by George W. Bush during his first three years. Hundreds more regulations are winding through the rulemaking pipeline as a consequence of the Dodd–Frank financial-regulation law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and the Environmental Protection Agency’s global warming crusade, threatening to further weaken an anemic economy and job creation. Congress must increase scrutiny of regulations—existing and new.

In other words, it will not be enough simply to stop this Administration from another term of issuing new regulations. There are so many crippling regulations and costs that are already in the pipeline from its first term that they must be repealed before they take effect. The full economic impact of ObamaCare, for example, was designed from the start not to take effect until after the President’s reelection. Even winning the Senate while holding the House of Representatives is not enough. Republican majorities in both the House and Senate could stop some new bad things from happening, but would do nothing to reverse those that are already headed our way. The President must be replaced, and conservatives must make doing so the top priority – what Haley Barbour would call the main thing.

Therefore, it is my fervent plea to all the listeners to American Radio Journal to remember to focus on informing everyone you know, and especially those independent, swing and undecided voters you know, just how bad what’s in the pipeline from the first Obama term will be, and how essential it is to defeat him, regardless of who the challenger might be.
