Toomey Statement On Budget Deal

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) today made the following statement on the federal budget deal that passed the House and awaits a Senate vote.

"Under President Obama, the federal government has racked up over $8 trillion in new debt – an astonishing, record-breaking amount by any measure. And this rapidly rising debt is occurring in spite of record levels of taxes coming into Washington. Clearly, we have a serious overspending problem that must be addressed.
"Unfortunately, this budget deal fails to address our overspending problem – in fact, it makes the problem worse by increasing spending. It also suspends the debt limit and allows Washington to continue piling up more red ink without addressing the gross fiscal mismanagement that causes the need for more borrowing in the first place. Our nation’s growing debt is costing us jobs and economic growth today, and it is an unfair burden to pass on to our children and grandchildren.

"I am also concerned about the budget gimmicks used to gloss over the deal’s increased spending. For instance, Congress will divert $1.5 billion in funds that federal law provides may only be spent to assist victims of child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, and other crime victims, and use that money to pay for wasteful spending. This is simply unacceptable. If President Obama and Congress want to continue spending like there’s no tomorrow, we should at least not take money away from victims of crime."
