Harrisburg, Pa. The Pennsylvania Senate Banking and Insurance Committee today approved Senate Bill 3, a measure that would ensure that no taxpayer funds are used to subsidize abortion coverage in health insurance plans mandated by the controversial federal healthcare law.

Michael Geer, president of Pennsylvania Family Institute, said: "Senate Bill 3 is necessary to keep our insurance laws consistent with Pennsylvania’s Abortion Control Act."

"Abortion is not health care. Pennsylvania does not use taxpayer dollars to fund abortions and we need to make sure it stays that way.

"The bill would respect the conscience and respect for life of millions of Pennsylvanians, and ensure that their tax dollars do not subsidize abortion coverage through the back door of the new state insurance exchanges."

Pennsylvania is among 30 states considering similar legislation and five which have already enacted this as law.

Pennsylvania Family Institute thanks committee chairman Sen. Don White (R-Indiana) and the committee for advancing this important bill and calls on the full state Senate to pass SB 3 and send it on to the House for final passage.
