Cows, Communists, and Cell Phones—and Wall Street

Our latest "V&V Q&A" is with Herb Meyer, who from 1981-87 served as special assistant to CIA director Bill Casey. Meyer was Casey’s right-hand man at the CIA in the 1980s, where he joined Casey and Ronald Reagan as a central player in the take-down of the Soviet Union. One year ago, as part of the Center’s Freedom Readers series, Mr. Meyer gave a lecture titled "Cows, Communists, and Cell Phones: An Economics Lecture Most Students Will Never Hear." In light of the "Occupy Wall Street" protests, we followed up with Mr. Meyer with this brief "V&V Q&A."

V&V: Mr. Meyer, you told our students last year that the United States is heading off an economic cliff and that "the Tea Party participants are the only people out there saying, ‘Are you crazy? Get off and make a U-turn!’ … God bless the United States. We’re not going down without a fight. And that’s what the Tea Party is about." What are your thoughts about the Tea Party and the "Occupy Wall Street" movement today?
Herb Meyer: Well, the Tea Partiers are STILL the only ones pointing out that we’re heading over a cliff, and that we’ve got to make a U-turn. Meanwhile, liberals say we’re not where we want to be because, although we’re going in the right direction, according to them, we aren’t going fast enough. So they want to press down on the accelerator … and take us to the cliff faster.
V&V: Where is this taking us politically?
Meyer: This is an irreconcilable difference of opinion. Those of us who believe we’re heading over a cliff cannot "compromise" by, say, slowing down from 65 mph to 55 mph. We’d STILL be going in the wrong direction and toward that cliff, only slower. The GOP establishment doesn’t get this, which is precisely why we’re going to have to vote them out to save the country. And liberals won’t accept a "compromise" of any sort that takes us from the road we’re on to another road.
V&V: So, you see the next election as a showdown of sorts?
Meyer: We’re stuck … until the voters make a decision one way or the other. In effect, we’re crossing the line from "politics" to a peaceful civil war. Let’s hope it stays that way: peaceful.
V&V: What is the challenge for leadership?
Meyer: The question is whether the GOP candidate who emerges for 2012 can articulate these two irreconcilable positions so that voters understand the choice. Then the question becomes: Are there more of "them" or more of "us?" One way or the other, we’re going to find out.
