ModernizePA Applauds Passage of Liquor Privatization Bill in State House

Pittsburgh – ModernizePA applauded the passage of liquor privatization legislation (HB 790) in the Pennsylvania State House today. Supported by Governor Tom Corbett and House Majority Leader Mike Turzai, the legislation passed by a vote of 105-90.

ModernizePA is a grassroots coalition of Pennsylvanians supporting the privatization of Pennsylvania’s liquor system.

"Pennsylvania remains one of only two states in the country with a government controlled liquor system," ModernizePA spokesman Mark Harris said. "Today’s vote marks a historic moment for Pennsylvania in the 80-year battle to privatize state-owned liquor stores. If successful, this effort will lead to greater consumer choice and lower prices for all Pennsylvanians. ModernizePA will be there every step of the way, rooting for this effort’s success."

HB 790 provides for the gradual privatization of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board’s system, requiring state stores to close once the number of privately owned liquor stores grow to more than double the number of state-owned liquor stores in a given county.
